Portable Light Sources and Match Controls

Illumination in the basement begins with scarce boxes of matches. Players open the inventory using the Tab key and assign matches to the F key. Pressing F strikes an individual match, lighting the immediate area around Alyssa for several seconds before the flame expires.

Update 0.6 added a persistent counter to the bottom-left corner of the display, tracking remaining matches directly during movement. Because match supplies are finite, keeping a light active continuously burns through stock needed for puzzle solving and monster containment.

Stationary candles positioned on tables and walls provide fixed light. Interacting with an unlit candle while holding an active match lights the wick permanently. These illuminated zones remain active without consuming additional matches, creating safe reference markers across maze-like hallways.

How Light Affects Mannequin Encounters

Different mannequin types inhabit the lower rooms, and their behavioral rules depend on illumination and gaze. Several stationary mannequins remain decorative, but aggressive variants activate once Alyssa acquires key items such as the basement key.

Smiling mannequins follow visual contact rules. Walking in darkness or turning Alyssa's back allows these figures to sprint forward immediately. Keeping an active match raised while facing them locks their limbs in place, preventing an attack.

Dark passageways force players to balance movement speed against match depletion. Moving backward while keeping an active flame pointed at pursuing figures halts their charge, buying time to reach crouch vents or doorways featured in the mannequins chase sequence.

Hiding in Shadows Against Mansion Antagonists

Light exposure carries severe risks when dealing with patrolling adults. In the game's official Steam forum discussions, developer Broken Arrow Games explained that antagonist mechanics diverge sharply between dark corridors and lit rooms.

Both Iris and Mortimer cannot see in the dark. When Iris patrols the cellar rooms, extinguishing matches and crouching inside unlit corners allows Alyssa to remain undetected even at close proximity. Iris produces distinct heel clicks on hard floors, which signals when it is safe to remain in the shadows or slip away to escape the maid.

Mortimer operates under similar visual limitations. He moves as a heavy pursuer who cannot track Alyssa through dark rooms, though his detection range is shorter and his hearing is less sensitive to footsteps.

Mask represents the sole exception to shadow concealment. As the developer noted, Mask moves barefoot with quiet steps, moves faster than the other pursuers, and sees through pitch-black areas effortlessly. Lingering in the dark provides zero safety against mask, requiring rapid flight rather than silent hiding. Using tested stealth tips helps prevent accidental footsteps across broken glass while moving between shaded hiding spots.

Illumination Tactical Choices

The choice to ignite a light source or remain in darkness depends on the specific enemy present in the hallway:

Light StateSituational PurposeOperational Trade-off
Lit MatchChecking unfamiliar corridors and freezing pursuing mannequinsConsumes one match from inventory and burns out after a brief duration
Lit CandleCreating permanent illuminated zones near key gates and puzzle locksDemands spending an active match up front at close range
Total DarknessEvading line of sight during Iris and Mortimer patrol sweepsRemoves path visibility and permits smiling mannequins to sprint

Conserving matches for active mannequin encounters while relying on darkness to bypass Iris and Mortimer forms the baseline strategy for surviving the mansion's lower floors.

Mannequins Chase

Survive the basement pursuit by tracking mannequin sightlines, avoiding noisy floor debris, and reaching the low corridor exit.
